WORD is composed of architects and contemplators with a high level of energy, intensity and thoughtfulness. By processing modern culture and lifestyle and then creating highly detailed designs that answer very particular desires, our team produces thrilling and satisfying moments for our daily lives. We strive to bring joy, jouissance, and even meditative qualities to every space we touch.

The office prides itself on being service-forward - the availability and candor we offer to our clients is paramount. We operate transparently, and believe that every project benefits from a willingness to freely share our experience in the design and construction process. We are always honest, and will never be ‘yes-men’.

Our design capabilities include projects of nearly all types and scales. We specialize in custom retail, lifestyle, residential and creative workplace design. Our recent projects include uniquely detailed spaces for design outlets, fashion and jewelry brands, artist’s studios and galleries, custom single family homes, and office space for production and animation studios. We often assist design-forward brands and foreign clients making their foray into the Los Angeles market. Our clientele include: A.P.C., Vanessa Seward, Kookai, STAMPD, Vrai & Oro, Zag Studios, Avalon Investment Company, Little Ground and other purveyors of culture and lifestyle. We welcome unique challenges and look forward with an anticipatory spirit to future collaborations.
Christopher Warren founded WORD in 2010 as a full service architecture and design studio. The firm’s work is now sought out for its unique progressive designs characterized by their rich detailing, inventive use of materials and expressive use of light and shadow. Chris has quickly become one of the city’s commercial/retail/lifestyle design experts, and was recently interviewed about the future of LA design for Vitra’s publication “The Merchant”.  He also led a discussion on the same topic at the conference “L.A.: Retail West”. Prior to WORD, Chris was a project designer for many years under Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne at Morphosis, where he led internationally renowned projects ranging from institutional buildings to European housing complexes. He was also a founding partner of the award winning office, Studio Shift.

In addition to his work as a practitioner, Chris taught design at the University of Southern California for over seven years, and delivered the commencement address to the School of Architecture’s class of 2011. He has since taught architecture design programs in China and Italy, and was most recently an invited visiting professor of urban design at Washington University in St. Louis. Chris is on the board of directors for the California Heritage Museum in Santa Monica, and remains active in many charities. He is LEED accredited and is a licensed architect in California.
